Job Summary:
This is a Community Service Work Study student employment position. Applicants must have Federal Work Study funds in their Financial Aid package.

At SMART Reading, our goal is to positively impact literacy outcomes by providing early reading support, access to books, and community engagement in a fun, inclusive environment for everyone involved. One of the primary ways we do that is through facilitating shared reading opportunities – kids and volunteers reading together with the goal of building reading engagement and motivation, two key factors in literacy development. Readers provide literacy support to kids and help foster a love of reading through fun, child-guided reading sessions. At Astor, SMART Reading sessions occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:15-2:00, with optional documentation assistance after.

This position reports on site for daily direction to Greg Dilkes, SMART Reading staff and on campus to Moreau Center Program Manager for Community Partnerships, Clare Kennedy.

Location: Astor Elementary 5601 N Yale St, Portland, OR 97203 (5 minute walk from Campus)

Core Duties:

  • Be a Reading Partner for a student at Astor Elementary
  • Be onsite and prepared to begin engaging with students by 1:15 PM.
  • Engage with students in cooperation with coordinator.
  • Cooperate with school, faculty, and fellow adult readers as needed.
  • Sign in and out per program requirements.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have Federal Work Study Funds in Financial Aid package (contact ...@up.edu with questions)
  • Successful completion of the SMART Volunteer background check.
  • Successful completion of the Portland Public Schools background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in primary education.
  • Interest in reading.
  • Patience and compassion.
