Position Summary
The City is hiring seasonal maintenance workers to work full-time for up to 4 ½ months (based on operational needs, budget, and candidate availability) in the following public works divisions: streets, parks, stormwater/drainage, and water. Employees may be shifted between the various divisions as needed.
Under the general supervision of a Public Works Supervisor and at direction of the Lead Maintenance Workers, this position performs a variety of manual labor and semi-skilled maintenance tasks in support of City streets, stormwater/drainage, parks, water and facilities maintenance operations while utilizing a variety of hand tools and gas-powered small equipment. Work consists of routine and repetitive tasks, processes, and/or operations and will be performed cooperatively with other employees or independently. Work will be completed in a manner that ensures individual, co-worker, and public safety and is performed in all weather and working conditions.
Essential Duties
- Operate maintenance equipment and power tools such as push mowers, edger's, weed eaters, blowers, rakes, brooms, shovels, and other related grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
- Maintain City rights-of-way and easements including mowing, blowing, edging, raking leaves, trimming, weeding, and removing trash.
- Assist with repair of potholes, patching, and sealing of pavement cracks.
- Assist with the repair and maintenance of storm drainage systems.
- Perform vegetation control duties in public rights-of-way, including flower beds/baskets, landscape beds and other grass areas.
- Remove vegetation from storm water drainage facilities, swales, etc.
- Clean walkways and parking lots around buildings.
- Perform minor repairs.
- Perform all duties in conformance with appropriate safety standards.
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner, provide information within the area of assignment, or forward to supervisor in efficient and timely manner.
- Prepare reports regarding completed activities as required.
- Operate and maintain an assigned vehicle including fuel, oil, and notification of repairs as needed.
- Follow/adhere to all city policies and procedures and safety program regulations and requirements.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Ability to: - Operate and maintain various hand and power tools, walk behind mower, edger, weed eater, small riding mowers, chain saws, and tree pruners.

- Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, in varying weather conditions.
- Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Gauge work progress and adjust in order to meet deadlines.
- Communicate clearly and courteously with the public, co-workers, and city personnel.
- Work as a team member and resolve conflicts effectively.
- Ability to work safely and to wear hazard appropriate personal protective equipment.

Experience, Education and Other Requirements- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Experience in manual labor, general maintenance, landscaping, or grounds keeping preferred.
- Experience pulling and loading trailers preferred.
- Must successfully pass all phases of the pre-employment hiring process, including but not limited to, reference checks, and a criminal background check.

Physical Demands and Work Environment While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, bend, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects, tools or controls. The position requires mobility. Many duties are physically demanding. May be required to lift heavy objects and materials in excess of 50 pounds. Activity and types of duties performed require manual dexterity and coordination. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Employees risk physical hazard from heavy equipment, traffic, and dirt/dust, fumes, chemicals, etc.
Temporary and seasonal status employees will accrue WA State Paid Sick Leave at the accrual rate of .025 hours of sick leave for every hour worked (equivalent to 1 hour for every 40 hours worked). A balance of up to 40 hours of unused sick leave may be carried over each year.
Temporary and seasonal status positions are not eligible for any other benefits.
