Postdoc Scholar

  2025-05-26     Oregon Health & Science University     Portland,OR
Description:

Department Overview

The Carbone Lab at Oregon Health & Science University is seeking a highly motivated and skilled junior Postdoctoral Scholar to join our team. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in both wet lab and computational research, with primary involvement in a federally funded comparative project aimed at understanding the role of human-specific 3D genome conformation and chromatin structure in human neuron development and neurodevelopmental disease.

The Knight Cardiovascular Institute (KCVI) is recognized as a top integrated center for cardiovascular clinical care, translational research and professional training in all aspects of heart and vascular disease. Guided by a multi-disciplinary approach, researchers and clinicians drive a vibrant translational research program, which focuses on delivering the latest knowledge and cutting edge care to patients. Specifically, research at KCVI seeks to improve patient outcomes by achieving earlier diagnosis of disease, more accurate monitoring of its progression, and tailoring therapy to the molecular basis of disease.

Function/Duties of Position

The successful candidate will work closely with molecular biology laboratory staff and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and a computational staff scientist. Key responsibilities include executing and troubleshooting high-throughput (epi)genomic assays—such as Micro-C, CUT&RUN, RNA-seq, and ATAC-seq—across different species and cell types/tissues. The role will also involve analyzing next-generation sequencing data from these assays, using established pipelines and open-source bioinformatics tools, as well as integrating multi-omic data to support research goals.

Additional responsibilities include contributing to manuscript writing, presenting findings at scientific conferences, and mentoring junior staff. In addition to the main project, the postdoc will contribute to other ongoing lab projects with similar research scope, offering a broad exposure to epigenomic research. Finally, there is the possibility to contribute to the KCVI Epigenetics consortium, which provides wet/dry services to investigators across different research areas (cardiovascular, cancer, aging, etc.).

Required Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Bioinformatics or closely related field
  • Extensive wet lab experience with routine RNA and DNA assays, as well as high-throughput (epi)genomic assay (e.g. Micro-C, CUT&RUN, RNA-seq, ATAC seq)
  • At least 2 years of experience executing bioinformatics analysis of next-generation sequencing data and familiarity with relevant tools and pipelines
  • Strong understanding of molecular biology, chromatin biology, and gene regulation
  • Proficient in using public bioinformatics tools (e.g. SAMtools BEDtools, BWA) for analyzing high-throughput sequencing data
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity in developing research and analysis strategies
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a strong track record of scientific publication
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary, collaborative team
  • Ability to prioritize tasks efficiently to meet project goals, with a strong sense of self-motivation and integrity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cross-species comparative analysis, particularly in mammals
  • Experience in single-cell assays, cell culture and differentiation
  • Proficiency in R, coding languages, and biostatistical methods
  • Familiarity with data integration techniques
