Terms and Hours: Part Time hourly, 39 week assignment period, generally 20 - 25 hours per week, non-exempt, July 28, 2025 to May 24, 2026.

Salary Range: $16.95 Hourly Wage

Job Summary: Consistent with the University's mission, the Assistant Hall Director (AHD) position provides hall leadership in the University's residence halls and resides in the residence halls with University of Portland students. AHDs invest in the lives of students and are leaders in the hall community through a culture of presence and role modeling. AHDs serve a key role in fostering community within the residence halls, inspired and informed by the University's Catholic and Holy Cross tradition of residentiality.

This position requires the ability to live full-time in the assigned University residence hall as an individual occupant. This position offers full tuition remission and AHDs are expected to be actively pursuing and enrolled in a graduate degree program. This position provides a furnished apartment within the assigned residence hall with included utilities and amenities (internet, laundry), as well as an academic-year meal plan, cell phone stipend from August-May, parking pass, and professional development.

Core Duties

Community Development

  • Resides in assigned University residence hall.
  • Under the direction of the Hall Director, assists in developing a culture of community and communal responsibility within the assigned residence hall.
  • Establishes rapport with residents, engages with them through daily interactions, and provides a consistent presence as a role model and information resource.
  • Understands University policies and procedures, educates students, and enforces policies.
  • Attends and participates in the planning, development and execution of educational programming and vibrant community events within the hall, to support and further the mission of the University.
  • Serves as a pastoral minister in the residence halls. Attends weekly celebration of Mass and assists with other spiritual activities such as the annual Hall Spiritual Retreat and Bible studies. Partners with the pastoral resident to provide pastoral support and faith development guidance.
  • Mentors and advises student leaders involved in Hall Council, including meeting individually and in groups to discuss event planning, assist with budget management, and troubleshoot problems. Coordinates Hall Council elections. Collaborates with the Hall Director in advising the Coordinator/Ambassador student leaders.

Student Development

  • Provides pastoral care and counseling.
  • Assists students with academic, social, spiritual, and personal needs or matters.
  • Maintains knowledge of campus resources and referral channels available to students.
  • Mediates conflicts and resolves issues.

Staff Development

  • Hires and supervises Community Assistants (student employees). Coordinates staff coverage schedules. Sets expectations for performance and provides feedback through performance evaluations. Addresses performance concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Participates in training activities for hall staff. Attends weekly staff meetings and assists the Hall Director in supervision of the Resident Assistant staff.

Hall Operations & Administration

  • Maintains regular on-call duty hours in rotation with the Hall Director and responds to problems and concerns brought forward by students.
  • Responds to and manages crisis situations through immediate action, sound judgment, and appropriate referrals.
  • Assists Hall Director with building and safety issues, and coordinates with Facilities Services, Campus Safety, and other University resources as needed.
  • Each Assistant Hall Director is assigned collateral task(s) or assignment(s) in support of a student affairs function for approximately 10 hours per week. These may include, but not limited to, work in the areas of student conduct, student care, wellness, campus ministry, retreats, campus safety, housing operations, orientation, club sports, commuter student support, Center for Gender and Sexuality support, or student leader hiring or training functions.

Other duties as relevant to the duties of the position or as assigned by supervisor or designee.

Education & Experience

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree.
  • Required: Actively enrolled in graduate program.
  • Preferred: Relevant experience as student or employee at an institution of higher education.
  • Preferred: Experience related to advising, community development, faith development, educational programming, and conflict resolution.
  • Preferred: AHD candidates who will be enrolled in the Master of Arts in Higher Education and Student Affairs (MA HESA) program at the University.
  • Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

Physical Requirements
