Position Details BASIC FUNCTION Under the direction of assigned custodial staff, the Student Custodian performs general custodial care of buildings and grounds in support of summer maintenance and cleaning efforts. This is a temporary, seasonal position intended for high school students. Student Custodians are not permitted to operate power-driven machinery by Oregon State Law. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Clean and dust offices and classrooms Sweep, mop, vacuum, and spot clean carpets Wash windows and clean sumps Empty wastebaskets and garbage cans Clean restrooms, kitchens, gymnasiums, and cafeterias Change light bulbs and assist with setup and breakdown as needed Perform other reasonable related duties as assigned Demonstrate a commitment to PPS's Racial Equity and Social Justice Commitment by applying the district Racial Educational Equity Policy and participating in equity-related trainings and development. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Basic cleaning tools and methods Health and safety procedures Ability to: Follow verbal and written instructions Work successfully in teams Use good judgment with students, staff, and the public Lift up to 50 lbs; bend, stoop, twist, walk, and carry items for extended periods Work in dusty or physically active environments EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Education: Must be a current or returning high school student Experience: No prior custodial experience required SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must be at least 16 years of age Must pass a background check Must commit to 20-40 hours/week during summer assignment WORKING CONDITIONS Environment: School buildings and facilities; dusty, active conditions Physical Demands: Standing/walking for long periods Lifting, carrying, and cleaning tasks requiring physical exertion Pay Rate: $15.95 per hour (will increase to $16.30 per hour after 7/1/25) Work Schedule: 20-40 hours per week Monday - Friday Portland Public Schools (PPS) is seeking talented people from diverse backgrounds and experiences to lead change and inspire PPS students.
