Position Details

POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs journey level skilled maintenance primarily related to carpentry for the purpose of resolving immediate operational and/or safety concernsand providing for preventive maintenance of a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces and structures; may direct the work of other classified staff in the area and perform related work as required.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an effective and efficient work environment.

Builds a variety of cabinetry and furnishings (e.g. counter tops, wall units, tables/desks, etc.) for the purpose of providing comfort, sanitation and safety within facilities.

Constructs, installs and repairs building structure; interiors, exteriors, casework, and equipment, fences, bleachers and stadium equipment.

Completes employer required training for the purpose of maintaining current knowledge regarding specific job and/or district, state and federal rules, regulations, policies and procedures and laws.

Estimates costs (e.g. time, labor, materials, equipment, work aids, services) for the purpose of ensuring that district expenses are allocated effectively and within budgetary guidelines.

Inspects facilities, systems and their components for the purpose of ensuring safety and identifying necessary repairs and providing an ongoing program of preventive maintenance.

Maintains tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items in safe operating condition.

Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.

Procures equipment, supplies, and materials (with prior approval of supervisor) for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items to complete maintenance work projects.

Recommends supplies and equipment for purchase for the purpose of maintaining the inventory of district owned hand tools, equipment, hardware, materials and supplies.

Remodels office and work space (e.g. inside/outside walls, added walls, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safe and efficient utilization of space.

Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.

Utilizes the maintenance work order system for the purpose of prioritizing, scheduling and documenting work activities.

Safely stores and labels all materials.

Reads and understands construction documents. May be required to perform plan reviews for contracted construction projects.

Assists in the writing of specifications for repairs and new construction.

Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service.

Builds forms, operates planers, shapers, jointers, lathes, handsaws, and other woodworking machinery.

Researches, purchases and inventories equipment parts, chemicals and supplies.

May train and direct the work of other classified staff in the area.

Assists and serves as "back up" to other Facilities Operations employees.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Installs and maintains flooring underlayment systems, wall board, tile and drop ceilings, door and window systems, sheathing, exterior siding, millwork and finish trim, auditorium seating, stadium seating, window treatment repair, marker boards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to:

Perform skilled carpentry work in the maintenance, repair, construction, alteration, forming, framing, and finishing of District buildings and facilities.

Interpret, explain and apply building codes, rules and regulations involved in assigned maintenance activities.

Effectively and safely operate a variety of tools and equipment used in the skilled carpentry trade.

Interpret shop drawings, sketches and work orders.

Perform heavy physical labor.

Understand construction documents including drawings and specifications.

Maintain routine records and reports.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Observe legal and defensive driving techniques.

Estimate labor and material costs.

Perform duties effectively, timely, and without supervision.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Knowledge of:

Residential and commercial/industrial practices and processes of the carpentry trade

Occupational hazards of the carpentry trade and precautionary measures to be observed.

Trade tools, equipment, materials, methods and techniques used in skilled carpentry and in general maintenance and repair.

Appropriate health and safety precautions and procedures.

Basic record-keeping techniques.

Federal, State, and local building codes and regulations.

Proper lifting techniques.

Training and Experience:Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.

Education/Training: Completion of a qualified apprenticeship program in a related field; OR three (3) or more years of education or training in residential, commercial or industrial carpentry. Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, OR

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in residential and commercial/industrial practices and processes of the carpenter trade. A combination of related training and experience which equals three (3) years.

License or Certificate required: Possession of a valid state driver's license

Union Representation: Represented - DCU

PAY RATE: $40.49/hour plus swing shift differential ($1.06/hour) with paid 30 minute lunch period

FTE: 1.0 (40 hours/week)

WORK YEAR: 260 days

WORK SCHEDULE:Swing Shift 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm Monday - Friday
