Staff Environmental Scientist - Health & Safety and Compliance Focused - Portland, OR
Maul Foster & Alongi (MFA) is looking for a Staff Environmental Scientist to support our growing environmental health and safety (EHS) and compliance work. In this role, you won't just be behind a desk, you'll also be out in the field inspecting industrial facilities, assisting with hazardous building materials assessments, and helping clients solve the kinds of complex regulatory puzzles that keep them up at night. From demolition and abatement projects to compliance audits, you'll play a key part in helping clients protect worker safety, meet environmental standards, and reduce risk. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience, work alongside seasoned professionals, and be exposed to a wide variety of project types that will expand your skills and confidence in the field of consulting.
As an Environmental Scientist you will...
dive into a variety of environmental health and safety (EHS) and compliance projects that make a tangible impact for our clients. Your day-to-day might include researching and interpreting complex environmental regulations, assisting with hazardous building materials assessments, supporting facility inspections, or helping to track and manage compliance programs related to air, waste, stormwater, or worker safety. One day you might be walking an industrial site in Oregon; the next, you're working through spreadsheets to help a client make sense of their regulatory requirements. You'll collaborate with senior staff while also being trusted to take initiative, ask smart questions, and follow your curiosity. If you're someone who enjoys solving messy problems and is ready to apply your education in real-world ways, this role will keep you learning and engaged from day one.
To thrive in this role, you must have...
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- An internship or academic experience related to compliance, industrial hygiene, or hazardous building materials.
- 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification (preferred but not required).
- Sound technical skills, along with organizational and problem-solving prowess.
- Are highly motivated, curious, and resourceful, ready to ask questions, find answers, and solve problems even when you don't know where to start.
- Have strong organizational skills and can navigate spreadsheets, checklists, and data tables with ease.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- A willingness to travel (up to 30%) to regional projects, with a valid driver's license.
- An understanding of data, data integrity, scientific methods, industrial hygiene principles, and regulatory essentials.
- The knack for being a stellar team player, whether working individually or collaboratively.
- Familiarity with compliance programs; preferred.
- Are excited about the possibility of pursuing certifications like Asbestos Inspector, Lead Risk Assessor, or CIH-we'll support you as you grow.
