Footwear Materials Designer:

Our client is seeking a Footwear Materials Designer to help shape the future of performance and lifestyle footwear through innovative material design. This role blends creativity, technical expertise, and hands-on exploration to develop and style materials that elevate both form and function.


This role is a hybrid model in Beaverton, Oregon.


Footwear Materials Designer Responsibilities:

  • Design and curate materials for footwear projects, aligning aesthetics with performance and end-use needs.
  • Create compelling material palettes, concept boards, and presentation tools to communicate design intent to cross-functional teams and leadership.
  • Develop hand samples and small prototypes using studio tools such as sewing machines, screen printing, and heat presses to test material aesthetics and construction ideas.
  • Use design software such as Adobe Illustrator and the broader Adobe Creative Suite to create and refine materials and communicate specifications.
  • Collaborate with design, development, and engineering teams to integrate materials into overall product concepts.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, sustainability practices, and new material technologies to inform material choices.
  • Contribute to the creation of tech packs and design documentation to support sampling and manufacturing.
  • Demonstrate curiosity and adaptability by exploring emerging tools, including AI-driven design platforms.


Footwear Materials Designer Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of relevant experience in material or footwear design; experience in athletic or performance footwear is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator is required; experience with the full Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
  • Strong eye for color, texture, and form with a keen understanding of how materials contribute to product function and consumer appeal.
  • Hands-on experience with material prototyping tools and studio equipment is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow project timelines and work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Interest in exploring new technologies, including AI design tools, with a willingness to learn on the job.
  • Knowledge of sustainable materials and environmentally conscious design practices is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in industrial design, textile design, fashion design, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
