Job Description

  • Duties:
  • Manage waste, assist in the maintenance and implementation of programs designed to appropriately disposition waste, minimize hazards to health and the environment, and to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards and requirements including:
    • Radiation and contamination surveys. (releases).
    • Environmental sampling: air, water, sludges.
    • Data collection.
    • Record keeping.
    • Instrument Operability Checks, maintenance of instruments.
    • Decontamination, generally by project.
    • Radiation Work Permit Level II Operator duties LPC-T/LPC-S.
    • Radioactive waste processing and packaging. Determine status, appropriately dispose of includes cutting, pangborn use, sandblasting.
    • May be required to work with hazardous waste.
  • Requirements:
    • Good written and verbal skills.
    • Able to work with a minimum of supervision and complete work independently.
    • Able to work closely with Operators, Supervisors, Technicians, and Maintenance Personnel.
    • Trainable in the use of Health physics instruments.
    • Clean work habits and close attention to detail is essential.
    • Must be a self motivator, able to carry out research/investigative assignments with little supervision.
    • Good organizational skills and ability to work several tasks at one time.
    • Able to lift and carry in excess of 50lbs.
    • Associate Degree or two years college with some science courses and/or equivalent training or experience in radiological or health science preferred.
    • Willing to work overtime when required by project or emergency conditions, including off shift and weekend work.
    • Must successfully qualify as a Radiation Work Permit Level II Operator and primary releaser. Prerequisites include general radiation training and RWP Level I Operator. RWP Level II OP - assess radiological condition and assign RWP. Manage project as it pertains to radiation and assure Level I adheres to requirements of permit.
    • Must complete Hazardous Materials Training and maintain certification.
    • Must be able to perform assigned work for extended periods of time while wearing respiratory protection. Annual medical approval and fit test required.
    • Able to pass PCC forklift certification program.
    • Able to work in difficult working conditions that may include dust, noise, temperature extremes, chemicals, elevated heights, etc., for extended periods of time.
  • Safety:
  • Objective: take responsibility for and demonstrate safe work practices.
  • NOTE: For job positions that require respiratory protection (more than a filtering face piece dust mask): In compliance with the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division Personal Protective Equipment standard for Respiratory Protection, OAR 437, Div.2/I 1910.134 and Oregon Health Division Rules for the Control of Radiation, OAR 333. Div. 120 (333-120-300 through 330), certain tasks within this job position require/may require the use of a NIOSH-approved respirator. An individual will not be assigned to these tasks if the person is not able to work under these conditions. Respirator selection will be based on the work performed, exposure information, duration of use and any other relevant factors. If a tight-fitting respirator is required, facial hair, temple pieces on glasses or other items that interfere with the face-to-face piece seal of the respirator are not permitted.
  • Typical Activities:
    • Adhere to plant and department safety rules.
    • Safely operate all equipment and tools.
    • Identify and report safety problems.
    • May be required to handle hazardous waste.
  • Performs other tasks as directed.
  • Training:
    • To qualify as a RWP Level II Operator, Grace C, the student must:
      • Complete prerequisites to RWP Level II Operator Training LPC Radiation Orientation Training, Employee Radiation Safety Training (Radioactive Materials), RWP Level I Operator Training, Preliminary Releaser Training.
      • Enroll and participate in 24-hour classroom instruction, RWP Level II Operator Training.
    • Pass written exam with 90% accuracy.
    • To qualify as a Level II Operator Grade B, the Grade C, under the direct supervision of a Grade A RWP Level II Operator, must successfully:
      • Perform a minimum of 10 assessments, including:
      • Assign and supervise a minimum of 3 RWP 96038.
      • Assign and supervise a minimum of 1 RWP 96032.
      • Assign and supervise a minimum of 1 RWP 96033.
    • To qualify as a Level II Operator Grade A, the Grade B must successfully:
      • Perform a minimum of 100 assessments, including:
      • Assign and supervise a minimum of 25 RWP 96038.
      • Assign and supervise a minimum of 5 RWP 96032.
      • Assign and supervise a minimum of 10 RWP 96033.
    • Paperwork must have minimum 95% accuracy.
    • Work for a minimum of 3 months as RWP Level II after Grade C exam.
    • Pass closed book written and field exam with minimum 95% accuracy.
    • May be required to complete hazardous waste training.
