Job Description and Responsibilities

Oregon Steel Mills is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Controls Engineer to join our team in Portland, Oregon. You will play a key role in optimizing and automating manufacturing processes, applying engineering theory, data analysis, and problem-solving techniques. This role collaborates with operations, quality, and engineering departments to improve safety, quality, and productivity while reducing costs.

  • Collaborate with operations and quality assurance to understand processes, products, and quality metrics.
  • Maintain and improve in-house and third-party software process models, monitor performance through data analysis.
  • Develop strategies to reduce defects, delays, and missed opportunities.
  • Gather and analyze data to create proof-of-concept models for process improvements.
  • Understand equipment limitations and collaborate on performance improvements.
  • Develop vendor relationships to understand provided equipment and software models.
  • Create training tools for organizational understanding of processes.
  • Maintain supervisory systems hardware and software, including upgrades and patches.
  • Ensure 24/7 operation of mission-critical manufacturing services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant engineering fields with emphasis on process modeling, control theory, and statistics.
  • 10 years of experience in steel or manufacturing industries preferred.
  • Strong mathematical background and experience with numerical methods.
  • Experience with adaptive software process models.
  • Proficiency in DEC Fortran, DEC C on OpenVMS, and .NET on Windows.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server/T-SQL.
  • Familiarity with virtual environments like VMware.
  • Understanding of industrial networking and topology.
  • Ability to interpret complex algorithms/source code and suggest improvements.
  • Knowledge of problem-solving techniques like brainstorming, value stream mapping, and Kaizen.
  • Willingness to support 24-hour operations, including variable shifts and remote support.
