Project Engineer I – Sunbelt Controls

Sunbelt Controls is a leading provider of building automation system solutions across the Western United States. We deliver comprehensive BAS installations, retrofits, and service that reduce energy and operational costs for a variety of vertical markets.

We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer I to manage the on- and off-site execution of daily project requirements under general supervision from the Project Manager. The role requires strong technical knowledge, independent judgment, and a customer‑focused approach.

Responsibilities

  • Develop personal intellectual and technical product knowledge specific to project needs.
  • Produce control system design drawings, sequences of operations, and submittals for lower‑level control systems.
  • Research and select control system peripherals and end devices.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications to ensure scope compliance.
  • Collaborate with other project team members to identify additional options for the customer (e.g., Energy Efficiency, Equipment Interface, Value Engineering).
  • Develop and maintain internal project construction schedules using MS Project.
  • Manage, support, and provide oversight for all 3rd‑party commissioning requirements on assigned projects.
  • Manage the project's material procurement process and coordinate the shipments of material to the site and/or other trades.
  • Perform modification of previously produced control designs to reflect field changes (As‑Built drawings).
  • Generate Operation & Maintenance manuals at project close and transition final documentation to the Engineering group.
  • Manage time and cost budgets for assigned project tasks and weekly time allocations.
  • Communicate effectively with all project team members concerning problems, obstacles, and issues.
  • Practice safe work habits and participate in office safety program requirements.
  • Attend and successfully complete OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 safety training classes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Construction Management (preferred).
  • 2–5 years of related work and engineering experience in the Controls or Construction Industry.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to read construction blueprints and electrical schematics.
  • Proficient in MS Office, AutoCAD, Visio, and basic TCP/IP network structure.
  • Highly organized with the ability to work in a high‑paced environment and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to operate independently and take ownership of all assigned tasks.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly sit and stand, use hands to operate keyboard and telephone.
  • Lift or move up to 50 pounds; climb ladders frequently.
  • Navigate construction site complexities while practicing site safety requirements.

Competitive Wages

$59,000 – $80,000 annually.
