Description:

Project Engineer

Location: Portland, OR

Job Type: Full-Time, In-Office (Required)

Buildskape is a growing commercial general contractor specializing in tenant improvement (TI) and CM/GC projects. We are a small, entrepreneurial team that values accountability, collaboration, and disciplined execution.

We're hiring a Project Engineer to support both preconstruction and project execution, with responsibilities that include bid coordination, plan reading, and scope validation, along with core project engineering duties during construction.

This is an in-office role for someone early in their construction career who has a solid foundation and is ready to take on meaningful responsibility while working closely with experienced leadership and project teams.

Role Overview

The Project Engineer supports Buildskape's preconstruction and construction efforts by helping ensure bids are well-coordinated, scopes are understood, and project information is organized and accurate.

You'll work closely with the Pre-Construction Project Manager, Project Managers, Superintendents, and company leadership, contributing to both bidding efforts and active projects. This is not a clerical role — it requires attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to engage thoughtfully with construction documents and real-world project challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Preconstruction & Bidding Support

  • Assist with bid coordination, including subcontractor outreach and bid tracking
  • Review drawings and specifications to support scope validation and coverage checks
  • Help identify missing, unclear, or conflicting scope items during bidding
  • Assist with pre-bid RFIs and addenda distribution
  • Support preconstruction meetings and documentation
  • Help organize bid files, scopes, and assumptions for internal review

Project Engineering & Construction Support

  • Support Project Managers and Superintendents on active projects
  • Assist with submittals, RFIs, document control, and tracking logs
  • Help maintain project documentation and correspondence
  • Participate in project meetings and assist with meeting minutes and follow-up
  • Support schedule updates and coordination efforts
  • Assist with project closeout documentation

What Success Looks Like

  • Bid information is organized, complete, and easy to review
  • Drawings and specifications are understood and accurately interpreted
  • Scope questions are identified early and escalated appropriately
  • Project teams receive timely, accurate information
  • You become a reliable, detail-oriented contributor across preconstruction and construction

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in commercial construction (TI or interiors preferred)
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Willingness to take ownership of assigned tasks and follow them through
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience or exposure to bid coordination or preconstruction support
  • Familiarity with Bluebeam for document review and markups
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Exposure to construction management platforms (ACC, BuildingConnected, Smartsheet)
  • Interest in adopting new tools and technologies, including AI-assisted workflows

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary, commensurate with experience
  • 4 weeks PTO + 11 paid holidays
  • 100% employer-paid medical & dental for employee + dependents
  • 401(k) with 3% guaranteed match
  • Company transportation for bid walks and site visits

Work Environment

  • Full-time, in-office position
  • Small, entrepreneurial team with direct access to leadership
  • Exposure to both preconstruction and construction operations
  • Not a remote or hybrid role

Who Thrives Here

This role is a good fit for someone who:

  • Wants to take the next step in their career and start to develop true ownership of their role and contribution to an organization
  • Is detail-oriented and organized
  • Takes pride in accuracy and follow-through
  • Works well in a small-team environment
  • Is motivated to build depth across both preconstruction and construction

If you're looking for a Project Engineer role with real responsibility, broad exposure, and high expectations, we'd like to hear from you.
