Job Title: Reading Tutor

Markham Elementary is a Title I school in Portland serving a diverse community of learners. The school is committed to supporting every student's academic success and building a love of learning. As a Reading Tutor, you will work directly with elementary-aged children to strengthen literacy skills, promote confidence, and foster positive learning experiences.

This position gives you the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community while developing professional skills in communication, leadership, and mentoring. Experience gained in this role is valuable preparation for careers in education, social services, or any field that values teamwork and problem-solving.

Interviews will be conducted between 9/15-9/26 with an anticipated start date of 10/1.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and small-group reading instruction to elementary students
  • Support students in practicing reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary development
  • Encourage and motivate students to build confidence and persistence as readers
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and staff to align tutoring with literacy goals
  • Prepare and organize reading materials or activities as needed
  • Track and report on student progress
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and supportive learning environment
  • Serve as a positive role model for students

Schedule

  • Work shifts available during the afternoon, typically between 1pm-5pm Mondays Fridays
  • Student must be able to work between 4 10 hours per week
  • Transportation to and from Markham Elementary is required, not provided

Rate of Pay

$16.30 / hour
