PRIMARY PURPOSE

The General Maintenance position within the Facilities Services department reports directly to the Maintenance Staff Supervisor. This role is primarily responsible for performing highly skilled maintenance and repair services, coordinating with skilled tradesmen, and ensuring the upkeep and functionality of the college's facilities. The ideal candidate will possess strong customer service skills, basic knowledge of repair practices and blueprints, and a minimum of five years of experience in general maintenance. To be successful in this position, the individual must excel at working independently, adhering to OSHA safety standards, and effectively communicating with a diverse population.

TEAMSTERS LOCAL UNION NO. 305 - This position is represented by the Lewis & Clark College Teamsters Local Union No. 305 (Affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Perform General Maintenance and Repairs

  • Execute skilled maintenance and repair tasks in areas such as drywall, taping, wall coverings, windows, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, and grout.
  • Repair minor roof leaks, wall fans, door adjustments, and other small-scale maintenance needs.
  • Utilize hand and power tools safely and effectively to complete assigned tasks.
Manage Materials and Inventory
  • Track and maintain accurate records of materials, labor, and equipment costs for assigned tasks using the automated work order request system.
  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of parts and supplies used for general maintenance.
  • Load, unload, and transport heavy and bulky materials using dollies, forklifts, and other equipment.
Ensure Safety and Compliance
  • Follow OSHA requirements for ladder safety, fall protection, lockout/tagout, hazardous communication, and other applicable safety protocols.
  • Use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, per OSHA guidelines.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in a safe operating condition, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
Support Campus Operations
  • Respond to on-campus emergency calls promptly during and after hours.
  • Assist skilled tradesmen in completing projects and work orders efficiently.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to address maintenance needs with strong customer service.
Communicate and Collaborate Effectively
  • Use email communication and the automated work order request system proficiently to manage assignments and updates.
  • Interpret blueprints and drawings to ensure accurate repair and maintenance execution.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse campus populations, ensuring clarity and professionalism.
Other Duties as Assigned

Lead Position (Only)
  • Lead and supervise maintenance staff by assigning tasks, prioritizing work orders, and establishing schedules and due dates.
  • Act as a supervisor in the absence of or as directed by the Maintenance Staff Supervisor.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to maintenance team members to enhance their skills and performance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & BEHAVIORS
  • Proficient understanding of maintenance practices and techniques, including performing general repairs and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills, demonstrated through clear, respectful, and professional interactions with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Superior capacity for independent work, completing assigned tasks efficiently with minimal supervision while maintaining strong attention to detail and quality standards.
  • Extremely strong commitment to promoting inclusion in the workplace, fostering an environment of respect, collaboration, and belonging by valuing diversity and engaging thoughtfully with individuals from varied backgrounds and experiences.
  • Proficient use of technology, including email and automated work order request systems, to manage communications, track tasks, and support daily workflow.
  • Excellent physical stamina and dexterity, supporting the safe performance of maintenance work that includes lifting and carrying up to fifty pounds and working in stooped, crouched, or physically demanding positions for extended periods.
  • Superior customer service skills, delivering responsive, courteous, and effective support to the campus community and addressing maintenance needs in a timely and professional manner.
  • Proficient knowledge of safety standards and compliance, consistently following OSHA requirements, ladder and fall-protection protocols, and proper use of personal protective equipment to maintain a safe working environment.
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the field of general maintenance.
PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
  • Completion of technical or vocational training in facilities maintenance or a related field.
  • Prior experience in a college or university facilities environment.
  • OSHA certification in relevant safety standards (e.g., ladder safety, lockout/tagout, fall protection).
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or similar automated work order request systems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to work in a stooped, kneeling, crouched, or squatting position as needed to perform assigned tasks.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of weight repetitively over 30 minute periods; and must be able to carry up to 25 pounds of weight repetitively and continuously (over the course of a 7.5 hour shift with rest and meal periods as defined by the Labor Agreement).
  • Must be able to effectively and safely manipulate the tools and equipment used in assigned tasks.
