Job Title: 2nd Pressman

Classification: Full-Time, non-exempt

Hourly Rate: Ranges depending on experience, starting at $19.50

Reports to: Operations Manager

Schedule: Swing Shift Monday - Friday, 2pm- 10:30pm (occasional weekends as needed)

General Summary: The 2nd Press Operator supports the Lead/1st Pressman in the setup, operation, and maintenance of a 6-8 color, 40-inch Komori offset printing press to ensure high-quality production and efficient workflow. This role assists with press make-readies, monitors print quality, performs routine maintenance, and helps troubleshoot issues to minimize downtime. The 2nd Pressman works closely with the press team to meet production schedules working well under pressure within tight deadlines, follows safety and quality standards, and continuously improve press performance.

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions:
  • Read and interpret job tickets and production instructions and assist with press set up and make-ready procedures
  • Assists in achieving "job ready" status by running samples to adjust print quality, registration, rule-ups, proof reading, color settings and mixings
  • Monitor pH and conductivity of fountain solution on press
  • Accurately enter daily production data into the shop floor system to indicate paper and ink usage
  • Assists First Press Operator to remove and replace worn rollers and adjust pressure between rollers of press, using appropriate hand tools
  • Clean and wash press components, including ink fountains and ink distribution rollers, using approved solvents and press cleaning mechanisms
  • Installs plates and blankets on press cylinders, using hand tools and power tools, to achieve pressure required for printing
  • Adjusts press machine parts, such as feeder and delivery mechanisms, suction grippers, guides, feed wheels., jogging device, tapes, and cams as directed by press operator, using hand tools
  • Fills ink and dampening solution fountains of press
  • Complete job ticket to include color, quantity (good vs. scrap), date, initial and forward printed material to appropriate department
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in accordance with company and safety standards
  • Perform preventative maintenance such as lubrication, cleaning and minor adjustments to rollers
  • Operate the press independently in the absence of the Press Operator, as qualified and assigned
  • Work as part of a team and participate in the company's Continuous Improvement program

Requirements

Required Qualifications
  • Highschool Diploma (or GED equivalent), or relevant knowledge
  • Specific knowledge of printing, graphic arts and the variable print workflow gained either through formal study or job experience
  • 2+ years providing extraordinary customer service
  • Availability to work swing shift, 2pm - 10:30pm
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experienced pressman, with in-depth knowledge of the mechanics and capabilities of offset printing presses. Specific experience with Komori press is a big plus.

  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to read and understand job ticket proofs and all other job-related paperwork
  • Strong decision-making skills and willing to assume responsibility for the work produced
  • Must be dependable and have a solid work ethic

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This position is very active and requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and push pallets. The employee must frequently lift and move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
