Host home support providers play a vital role in offering a safe and welcoming living environment for local high school students facing housing instability. By providing a room in your home, you can make a significant difference in a young person's life as they work towards completing high school, obtaining their GED, or pursuing community college education.
This position is a longer-term commitment, typically lasting from a few months to a year, and involves no parenting responsibilities. Rather, it functions on a landlord-tenant basis where the home provider offers housing, meals, and a supportive adult presence. While students cannot pay cash rent, they can contribute to household responsibilities.
Students participating in this program are usually referred through their high school counselor and agree to maintain their focus on education, remain drug- and alcohol-free, and adhere to mutually established household expectations as detailed in a formal rental agreement. Local mediation programs assist in creating this rental agreement and provide conflict resolution support if necessary. Secondly, host support staff is available to coach and assist throughout the hosting experience.
When students transition out of the program, they not only gain a reference for future housing opportunities but may also qualify for tuition and fee waivers at public colleges and universities in Oregon.
Host home support providers are always in urgent demand! If you are located in Washington, Clackamas, East Multnomah, or Lincoln Counties, consider becoming a host support provider and make a lasting impact on a young person's life.
