Position Overview:

The Veterinary Care Associate is vital in delivering exceptional medical care and service to our Vetco Total Care hospital patients while embodying the values of Petco. This position is essential for creating a supportive and motivating atmosphere within the practice.

Key Responsibilities

The Veterinary Care Associate will undertake the following tasks, with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Greet clients and patients, ensuring a welcoming environment, and assist in gathering vital signs and recording information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Support veterinarians during routine and emergency appointments, surgeries, and dentistry under supervision.
  • Perform patient restraint, process lab samples, manage medications, and maintain accurate EMRs as directed.
  • Schedule appointments, educate clients, relay test results, and ensure patient records are up-to-date.
  • Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, assist with anesthesia, and monitor vital parameters during recovery.
  • Administer in-hospital treatments for sick patients, including medications and fluid therapy, ensuring their well-being.
  • Assist in training new staff under the guidance of the Hospital Operations Manager (HOM) or Hospital Lead (HLOD).
  • Maintain a clean and organized hospital environment according to established protocols.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other assigned duties as needed.
  • Provide backup support at the front desk and on the phone when required.

Supervision

The Veterinary Care Associate will work under the direct supervision of veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians, following general direction from the HOM/HLOD.

Planning and Problem Solving

This role is critical for the efficient operation of the hospital and enhances the experiences of both patients and clients.

Education and Experience

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in a veterinary practice or in a related animal care role is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • A compassionate and professional demeanor is crucial, especially in high-stress situations.
  • Proficiency in computer and telephone use.
  • A collaborative mindset, open to learning new skills and adapting to changes.

Work Environment:

This position primarily takes place within a veterinary hospital setting. The role entails physical activities such as bending, lifting up to 30 pounds, standing for extended periods, and frequent interactions with clients and pets.
