Essential Job Functions:

This section outlines the key responsibilities you will undertake. You should be prepared to perform the following duties with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Deliver exceptional patient care through thorough physical examinations, accurate disease diagnosis, treatment provision, and preventive care tailored to each patient's needs.

  • Implement a problem-based methodology that encompasses developing comprehensive problem lists for every patient, differential diagnoses, diagnostic plans, and treatment strategies based on test interpretations.

  • Maintain detailed and precise documentation of patient assessments, exam findings, diagnostics, treatments, medications, client communications, and diagnoses in the medical records.

  • Conduct both routine and complex surgical procedures including, but not limited to, spays/neuters, abdominal exploratories, and mass removals.

  • Execute routine and complex dental procedures, including full dental examinations, dental radiograph evaluations, and various oral surgeries.

  • Develop treatment plans for hospitalized patients based on thorough assessments, and facilitate effective communication with referral hospitals for continuity of care.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engage in round table discussions at the start and end of shifts as both incoming and outgoing doctor.

  • Share knowledge with staff to enhance care quality and communication for both clients and patients.

  • Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned.

Nature of Supervision:

As a veterinarian, you will work under the guidance of a Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director while exercising discretion in patient care decisions. It is crucial to maintain the standards set forth in the Petco Veterinary SOPs and proactively welcome feedback aimed at elevating patient care.

Our veterinarians are encouraged to collaborate collegially and maintain a professional demeanor.

Planning and Problem Solving:

Effective problem-solving skills are essential in veterinary medicine, enabling timely diagnosis and further care for all patient concerns.

Your contributions will be vital in nurturing a thriving practice focused on delivering high-quality care, fostering a well-trained and motivated team, ensuring employee retention, and enhancing patient welfare while achieving customer satisfaction.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities; however, the veterinarian naturally assumes a leadership role in the hospital environment.

Education/Experience:

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary institution.

  • Active and unrestricted veterinary license in the relevant state or the ability to secure one before start date.

  • Current DEA license and Controlled Substance License as applicable; ability to obtain by start date.

  • USDA Category I (minimum) Accreditation or completion within two months of hire.

  • Comfortable with anesthesia and routine surgeries, including canine and feline spays, neuters, mass removals, and dentals.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Compassionate and sympathetic, maintaining professionalism under stress and emotion.

  • Proficient in telephone and computer skills.

  • A collaborative team player eager to learn new techniques and adapt positively to change.

Work Environment:

Most responsibilities will be performed within the Vetco Total Care veterinary full-service hospital, necessitating bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing for extended periods. Interacting directly with clients and their pets will be a significant aspect of this role.

The salary range is $83,700.00 - $177,700.00. Actual pay may vary based on experience, position, and location.
