Position Summary

FVRLibraries is seeking a full-time (40 hours/week) Security Guard. This position will be predominantly assigned to our Vancouver and Cascade Park Community Libraries but may also cover other locations as needed. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to make apositive impact on our community by ensuring the library is a welcoming and safe space for all visitors and employees. The library prioritizes safety of our patrons and staff. This position uses an empathy-based approach, leveraging relationships with our patrons to maintain a welcoming and safe environment for the diverse population we serve. Although there are occasions when patrons are excluded from the library, we do not use force or physically remove patrons. We believe in using proactive de-escalation techniques and referring patrons to community resources before calling local authorities to trespass library visitors. The ideal candidate will enjoy promoting a positive environment in a busy and diverse building.

The security guard is responsible for:

  • Maintaining a welcoming and safe environment for all internal and external customers.
  • Fostering positive relationships with local social service and public safety institutions, such as outreach staff of services for the homeless and neighborhood police officers.
  • Monitoring the library facility and grounds to identify and prevent safety concerns and proactively and professionally respond to violations of the Library Rules of Conduct.
  • Responding to concerns from both staff and patrons in an efficient manner and documenting safety and security incidents.
  • Collaborating with other security guards and branch employees.
  • Keeping current with de-escalation techniques, first-aid, and library policies and procedures.

Education & Experience

To be considered, candidates must have:
  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • 1-3 years of related experience, with customer service experience.
  • Possession of CPR/First Aid/AED training, or ability to obtain within first 3 months.
Schedule

This is a floater position; the schedule may vary week to week. The default schedule is listed below. Employees will receive their schedule the Friday prior to the scheduled workweek.
  • Sundays: 9:05 AM - 6:05 PM
  • Mondays: 9:05 AM - 6:05 PM
  • Tuesdays: 10:05 AM - 7:05 PM
  • Wednesdays: 10:05 AM - 7:05 PM
  • Thursdays: 10:05 AM - 7:05 PM
  • Fridays: OFF
  • Saturdays: OFF
Compensation

The pay grade (Pay Grade F) for this position spans from $21.24 per hour to $30.01 per hour. Compensation for this position is negotiated by WPEA for their members as part of the collective bargaining process.

Employees promoting into this position will receive the minimum rate of the new job classification pay grade in step A, or the step closest to but no less than one hundred and five percent (105%) of their current hourly rate, whichever is greater.

WPEA members progress through the pay grade by receiving step increases on their assigned step increase date (SID).
  • Employees who are newly hired at the minimum step of the pay grade will receive a two (2) step increase following completion of the twelve (12) months of continuous employment in the position, and an additional two step increase following 24 total months of continuous employment in the position.
  • Employees newly hired above the minimum step of the pay grade will receive a two (2) step increase following completion of the first twelve (12) months of continuous employment in the position.
  • Except as provided above, all employees will receive a one-step increase annually, on their Periodic Increment Date, until they reach the top of their pay grade.
Some positions may be eligible for a 5% pay premium on top of the starting pay rate for additional language skills. To be eligible for the additional pay employees must pass a test demonstrating verbal and written fluency in languages commonly used in our communities. Examples may include, but are not limited to, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin and American Sign Language.

Employees are provided 13 paid holidays throughout the year. The initial vacation leave accrual is 11 hours per month for full time and 6.6 hours per month for part time; this increases over time based on years of employment. Sick leave accrual is 8 hours per month for full time and 4.8 for part time per month. We also offer other types of paid time off for situations such as jury duty, bereavement leave, inclement weather and more.

Position Selection Process

This position is represented by WPEA and will be awarded according to the FVRL/WPEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Lateral Transfers: After posting the position for bid the Employer will award the position to the most senior bidder who meets the definition of a lateral transfer.
  • Promotions: Any Employee for whom the opening would be defined as a promotion may submit a FVRL job application during the posting period. If there are no successful lateral transfer candidates, Employees who meet the minimum qualifications for the job classification will be considered. Skills assessments may be required for positions that have technical, mechanical or physical qualifications. Skills assessments will be scored and a passing point established. The passing point will be established by mutual agreement between the Union and the Employer. Candidates who have previously passed the skills assessment will not be required to retake the assessment unless it is changed. Qualified promotional candidates will be interviewed and those with the two (2) highest scores will be considered. Of those two, the position will then be awarded to the candidate with the highest seniority
