VisionGift is a non-profit organization founded in 1975 by Lions Clubs of Oregon, which recognized the need for an eye bank to provide ocular tissue for transplants, research and medical education. Since its inception, over 60,000 people have received the gift of sight from tissue procured and screened by VisionGift, which works closely with transplant surgeons. Additionally, ocular tissues have been utilized for valuable research projects and surgical training.

VG is currently offering a challenging and rewarding Per-Diem Recovery Technician position to provide on-call coverage for Portland and the surrounding areas. Per Diem Technician is responsible for post-mortem whole-eye enucleation or in situ corneal excision preceded by appropriate donor suitability screening. Recoveries are performed in the field including locations such as hospital patient rooms, morgues, funeral homes, medical examiner offices and other partner agencies.

Examples of responsibilities include:

• Coordination with Donor Referral Line (DRL) regarding dispatch, logistics and transport of tissue and blood samples
• Review of legal authorization for donation; verification of accuracy and completion
• Perform donor recoveries according to Standard Operating Procedures.
• Obtaining vitreous samples for Medical Examiner's Office as needed
• Complete documentation of tissue recovery, blood draw, and other pertinent recovery details on appropriate paperwork
• Appropriately packaging tissue, blood samples and paperwork for transport
• Entering donor and recovery information into database and ‘checking' tissue into lab
• Process blood samples for transport to appropriate serology testing lab as needed
• Tissue preservation, including corneal excision as training indicates
• Cell phone must be on and close at hand during hours of availability

In-house training is provided at $20/hour. Preference will be given to applicants with experience or course work in surgical settings, biological sciences, allied health, and/or medical technology. A flexible schedule is preferred as well.

This is an on call position where the technician must be available to be dispatched on a recovery during their on call shift. Shifts vary and are assigned a month in advance. We are a 24 hour organization and we operate 7 days a week. We are currently seeking staff to work Sunday-Tuesday and every other Wednesday from 6pm-6pm

Recoveries are paid on a per-case basis between approximately $110 - $155. Standby ("On-Call") rate is $3.00/hr for day hours and $4.00/hr for night hours. Hourly rate is $20/hr for training and/or meetings. Phone stipend for use of phone for work communication.

Requirements:

• Able to lift 50 pounds
• Have a valid driver's license with an excellent driving record and reliable, insured vehicle
• Have access to internet with the ability to access Microsoft Office
