Buildings And Grounds Maintenance Worker

The Buildings and Grounds Maintenance Worker ensures that City buildings, facilities, and grounds are maintained in safe, clean, and fully functional condition to support the productive use of all City resources. To accomplish these tasks, the worker collaborates closely with City staff, departments, and administration, performing routine maintenance, repairs, and seasonal or emergency tasks as needed.

The selected applicant will report to the City Manager.

Essential Functions:

  • Infrastructure Maintenance (40%)
    • Repairing and maintaining streets, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
    • Filling potholes and performing asphalt or concrete patching.
    • Inspecting and repairing street signs, traffic signals, and streetlights.
    • Cleaning and maintaining storm drains and sewer systems.
    • Coordinating contractors and vendors to facilitate maintenance projects. May be required to work aside contractor or vendor, and handle change orders under the approval of City Manager.
    • Removing hazardous materials or items such as branches, debris from streets, parks, and other city owned property.
    • Reporting any unsafe conditions to City Manager and/or other authorized managers.
  • Grounds and Parks Maintenance (30%)
    • Mowing lawns, trimming trees and shrubs, planting flowers or trees.
    • Maintaining public parks, playgrounds, and recreation areas. May be required to conduct light construction, cleaning, along with assisting with minor repairs and upkeep.
    • Watering landscaping, operating irrigation systems, and managing turf health.
    • Removing litter, debris, and graffiti from public areas.
    • Reporting any unsafe conditions to City Manager and/or other authorized managers.
  • Building and Facility Maintenance (30%)
    • Cleaning, repairing, and maintaining city-owned buildings, public restrooms, and other facilities. Includes, rooms, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, offices, stairways, and windows, not limited to using proper cleaning equipment to effectively and efficiently clean areas.
    • Performing basic carpentry, plumbing, or painting tasks.
    • Assisting with snow removal, ice control, and sidewalk safety during winter.
    • Prioritize work orders with other daily priorities.
  • Other General Expectations:
    • Following safety procedures and using personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Reporting hazards or unsafe conditions to supervisors.
    • Ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulations.
    • Responding to citizen complaints of requests for public maintenance services, with approval or guidance from City Manager.
    • Emergency assistance or repairs of city infrastructure
    • Communicate effectively with members of the district and community.
    • Assist in updating the City's emergency management plan and coordinate with local jurisdictions and partner agencies on preparedness, response and recovery efforts.
    • Ability to relate to officials, staff and public in a courteous manner.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years' experience in building, facilities, and grounds operations. Experience in public works preferred.
  • Familiarity with computers and software relating to emails, website, maintenance and inventory.
  • Experience operating standard maintenance equipment (mowers, hand tools, power tools, small vehicles) is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of building systems, grounds maintenance, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance tasks, including carpentry, plumbing, painting, and minor repairs.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to read chemical labels, and material safety data sheets (MSDS).
  • Knowledge of city policies, ordinances, and rules.
  • Knowledge and ability to use office equipment, programs, and software.
  • Ability to safely operate a variety of maintenance, grounds, and light construction equipment, including mowers, tractors, skid steers, and other motorized or specialized machinery. Good physical stamina and ability to perform manual labor in varying weather conditions.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license (requires clean driving record).
  • Certification or training in specialized equipment operation (e.g., forklift, tractor, snowplow) may be required or preferred.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects as needed.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or respond to emergencies.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to City policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials that may exceed SO lbs.
  • Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching.
  • Requires climbing and balancing.
  • Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.
  • Must work in noisy and crowded environments.
  • Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
  • Must be able to drive a mechanical vehicle.
  • Must be able to work in high places

Selection Process:

Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. An offer of employment is contingent on the verification of credentials and other information required by City of King City policies, including passing a drug test and a driving history review when driving is required for position.
