DJ&A is seeking a full-time Project Accountant II to join our team. This position is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who brings a strong understanding of project-based financial management and enjoys collaborating with project teams to ensure accurate, compliant, and timely financial reporting.

Project Accountant II oversees the financial management and reporting for assigned projects, supporting Project Managers with project setup, budgeting, forecasting, billing, and analysis, while ensuring compliance with accounting standards, internal controls, and contractual requirements.

As Project Accountant II, you will own project setup and billing processes from contract review through invoicing and collections. You will prepare and analyze project billing and AR reports, produce invoices, support month-end close activities, and participate in monthly finance/PM meetings to explain project performance, identify variances, and help resolve issues. Success in this role is demonstrated through consistent on-time billing, accurate financial reporting, clear communication with Project Managers, and a proactive, team-oriented approach.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Set up projects and project phases in accordance with contract terms and company policies; confirm budgets, billing terms, and billing formats at project startup
  • Prepare, review, and issue client invoices, including labor, expenses, and consultant costs; ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with contract requirements
  • Maintain accurate project billing files, including source documentation, expenses, consultant invoices, and billing support
  • Work closely with Project Managers in meetings to explain project financials, identify variances, and support corrective actions
  • Track direct and reimbursable expenses and maintain accurate accounting records for assigned projects
  • Support month-end and period-end close activities; respond to project finance questions as needed
  • Assist with collections efforts and research billing or unbilled issues in coordination with Accounting
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and contractual billing requirements
Preferred Qualifications
  • 35 years of project accounting or project billing experience, preferably in an A/E/C, consulting, or professional services environment
  • Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals and ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial data and contract terms
  • Demonstrated experience with project setup, invoicing, AR processes, and reimbursable expense billing
  • Ability to manage multiple clients, entities, and projects as the organization grows
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including advanced Excel skills for financial analysis and reporting
  • Strong organizational, time management, and analytical skills with high attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with Project Managers and finance team members
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently while working collaboratively in a team environment
  • Experience with Deltek Vision, Deltek Vantagepoint, or other project-based accounting systems
  • Experience working with standard A/E/C contract types, including time & materials, lump sum, and not-to-exceed agreements
  • Prior experience supporting Project Managers with project financial reporting and analysis

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
