We are looking for someone to provide leadership and oversight for the Oregon State Bar’s (OSB) initiatives and programs to advance diversity and inclusion within the legal profession.

Essential Duties include the following:

Provide leadership in shaping the strategic direction for OSB efforts around advancing diversity and inclusion within the Oregon bench and bar. Facilitate the creation and implementation of an action plan to further OSB diversity and inclusion goals set by the Board of Governors (BOG).

Develop, oversee, and evaluate programs of the department, ensuring they are in line with the mission and goals of the OSB and are run as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Responsible for day-to-day operations of the department within policy guidelines set by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the BOG. Develop the long- and short-range plans for the department. Held accountable largely on the basis of results through the program measurement process.

Serve as liaison to the Advisory Committee on Diversity and Inclusion and to the Diversity Section Executive Committee. Collaborate with these committees and provide guidance, leadership, and support for their work to further OSB diversity and inclusion goals.

Cultivate and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders as necessary to advance OSB diversity and inclusion goals.

Identify and recommend to bar staff and the BOG best practices for advancing diversity and inclusion within the bench and bar.

Serve as a professional resource for bar members on the topic of diversity and inclusion, promoting best practices and providing information and training.

Facilitate meetings of the Diversity Action Council.

Supervise staff of the Diversity & Inclusion Department including, but not limited to, recruitment, hiring, training, retention, scheduling, coaching, and reviewing work and evaluating performance. Make recommendations to the CEO on employment and termination of staff.

Develop annual budget for the department with approval of the CEO and monitor all revenue and expenditures. Develop and implement a plan to supplement the department budget as needed to support diversity and inclusion programs.

Foster cooperation and teamwork among program staff and with other bar departments. Promote customer service orientation toward members and other recipients of program services.

Collaborate with and support other directors and managers on cross-departmental projects and issues.

Responsible for identifying appropriate data points for measuring the performance of the Diversity & Inclusion Department and programs. Held accountable largely on the basis of results through the program measurement process.

Represent the OSB and its work to promote diversity and inclusion at the national, state and local levels.

Model behavior and provide leadership that values diversity and incorporates inclusive and culturally competent practices.

Candidates may have any satisfactory equivalent combination of the following experience & training which ensures the ability to perform the work.

A BA or BS degree in a related field. Advanced degree in a related field (e.g., social justice, nonprofit administration) helpful, but not required. JD strongly preferred.

Five years of increasingly responsible experience in planning, developing, administering, evaluating, and budgeting for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and programs serving multiple stakeholders.

Supervisory experience to include personnel selection, evaluation, and coaching.

Experience with strategic planning and implementation.

Demonstrated ability to build constructive and collaborative working relationships with and among various interest groups.

Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with demonstrated ability to listen, use tact, and facilitate conversations among various interest groups around diversity, equity, inclusion, implicit bias, and cultural competency issues.

Experience designing and presenting educational and training sessions on implicit bias, cultural competency, or other topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Experience developing and cultivating charitable gifts and donations.

Familiarity with the legal system, the legal profession, and/or legal education helpful.

Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite in a Microsoft Windows environment with particular emphasis on Word, Excel, and Outlook. Experience with database programs. Ability to become familiar with OSB-specific programs and software.

Exceptional written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate to a broad constituency with effective public speaking and public relations skills before large and small groups.

Excellent organizational and time management skills and practices with ability to prioritize multiple activities and projects in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment.

Strong self-motivation skills requiring minimal supervision with ability to balance independent and team-oriented work.

Ability to exercise professional demeanor and provide a high level of customer service for a potentially demanding customer base in a variety of situations.

Ability to exercise sound judgment in keeping with the policies and objectives of the department and the Oregon State Bar.

Commitment to the concept of teamwork and cross-responsibility within a department and between departments.

Ability to communicate in person, in writing, by e-mail, and by telephone.

Ability to use standard office equipment and computer peripherals.

Ability to perform as a public speaker, with or without using presentation software and equipment.

Ability to travel overnight, inside and outside Oregon, to meetings and seminars.

Ability to work in a moderately noisy, open environment.

For this position, the salary range is $7,814 to $8,970 per month. The OSB offers excellent benefits including voluntary 6% participation in the PERS program.
