Reports-To: Sr. Director of Governance, Risk and Safety Team
Exemption Status (typically): Exempt
Requirements: As a retail grocer, we operate 7 days/week and 365 days/year and as such work in support of our stores may include evening and weekend hours per the needs of the business. Valid Driver License and vehicle required, with ability to travel regularly to store locations, trade shows / events and/or other off-site locations throughout the local region.

About the role: Responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining an integrated and dynamic security and loss prevention program that effectively leverages internal and external security partners and technology in a way that reflects New Seasons Market mission, vision and values.

Required Permits and Licenses: Valid driver license and vehicle. Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Executive Manager License and Unarmed Private Security Instructor Certification required.

Position Specific Functions

  • Cross-functionally develop, implement and evolve security program and policies to foster a safe and inclusive work environment that deters disruptive behavior and is aligned with NSM values.
  • Develop, implement and maintain effective loss-prevention and security-related incident reporting
  • Identify, analyze and measure key program metrics. Report on these metrics to stakeholders across the company.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative data to identify program gaps and provide effective safety and security support, resources, and coaching to Operations and Customer Service & Safety Specialists (CSSS) staff.
  • Develop and deliver new hire and annual refresher security trainings to Customer Service & Safety Specialists (CSSS) and Operations staff covering NSM safety and security policies, including verbal de-escalation, defensive tactics, report writing, and loss prevention.
  • Trains and provides coaching and feedback to Customer Service & Safety Specialists(CSSS) and Operations teams in all stores. Supports department managers in performance management as needed.
  • Conduct Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Unarmed Security Professional classes for Customer Service & Safety Specialists (CSSS) and ensure Customer Service & Safety Specialists (CSSS) staff maintain up-to-date required trainings and certifications.
  • Partner with leaders across the organization to ensure policies and programs support a safe environment in our stores with an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusivity.
  • Manage external security vendor relationships.
  • Partner with stakeholders across the company to implement, train and utilize technology and equipment needed to maintain and support a safe environment (such as camera and security alarm systems, panic buttons and store access systems).
  • Fosters and facilitates collaborative relationships between cross-functional stakeholders across the company to inform and evolve security and safety best practices
  • Engages Customer Service & Safety Specialists (CSSS), Operations and Store Leadership Teams with trainings, meetings, coaching, and regular updates/communications.
  • Regular presence in store locations to support safety and security measures, provide coaching and in the moment training.
  • Partner with relevant organizations and law enforcement officials to align company efforts with community.
  • Tools and Equipment Used (not all inclusive): This position works with standard office equipment. May be required to use the following tools and equipment when working in stores or offsite; baler, hand truck, POS, industrial kitchen equipment (i.e. blast chiller, grill, knives/blades, oven, grills, scales, etc.) and basic housekeeping / janitorial items.
  • This position works consistently at a light work level and may be asked to work on occasion at a medium or heavy work level when supporting stores or other offsite events. Frequently required to sit, walk, reach and grasp. Occasionally required to be on feet with a mix of standing and walking throughout shift. Up to occasionally, dependent on location, required to climb stairs, step stool and /or ladders.

What you Bring as a Candidate:

  • Minimum of 6 years of security-related experience required.
  • Prior experience in security program development strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology/Criminal Justice or related fields preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint, with skills to learn new computer programs and systems.
  • Collaborative, strategic thinker and problem solver, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with ability to respond to urgent job responsibilities as they arise and flexible when priorities redirect.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact and diplomacy, to collaborate, negotiate and communicate effectively and professionally with cross-functional partners at all levels in the company.
  • Self-motivated, with ability to work independently and in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.

Physical and Environmental Work Space: Work occurs in office, a variety of off-site environments and in a grocery store environment which includes surfaces that can be wet and slippery, moderate noise level, and temperature extremes in controlled environments in the cooler and freezer, and depending on location, working outside in all temperatures.
